I can&#8217;t even guess how many of these checklists I&#8217;ve read over the last five years\u2014probably an embarrassing amount.&nbsp;For first-time parents, dipping your toes into the overwhelming amount of gear is tricky. I had no idea where to begin and what we&#8217;d really need. There are so many things to choose from and they come in so many varieties. And then it&#8217;s fairly inconvenient that newborns and babes are a very particular bunch (as are the parents that come with them!). Some babies take a bottle or pacifier, some don&#8217;t. Some love the swing, others scream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The products you try to guess will be the favorites might end up in the giveaway pile, so there can be some guesswork. But I thought I&#8217;d take time to get down the items that have been so helpful to us. This is our comprehensive must have checklist \ud83d\ude42 And\u00a0I&#8217;ve created a\u00a0printable registry checklist that&#8217;s at the bottom.\u00a0Happy preparing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A note on registering: Amazon and Target registries offer 15% off for anything that isn&#8217;t purchased, so if you&#8217;re figuring out which registry is best for you, keep the completion discounts in mind!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"color:var(--color-neutral-600);\">IN THE NURSERY<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Must haves:<\/em><br>\n<\/strong><strong>Crib or co-sleeper<\/strong>\u2014love natural tones (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2DbNKHf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like the Gelato by Babyletto<\/a>) or this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/us\/en\/catalog\/products\/50248541\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IKEA crib<\/a><br>\n<strong>Crib Mattress<\/strong><br>\n<strong>Baby monitor<\/strong>\u2014we&#8217;ve used multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2G9kWQn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Motorola video baby monitors<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Da71Zy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this super basic VTech<\/a>, the video was so nice to have for our first, but these days we are totally happy with a &#8216;just noise&#8217; one \ud83d\ude42<br>\n<strong>White noise machine<\/strong>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2URfoDo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this one (by Dohm)<\/a> has been great for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Great to have:<\/strong><\/em><br>\n<strong>Glider<\/strong><br>\n<strong>Bassinet or Moses basket<\/strong>\u2014we have a Restoration Hardware basket for the early days<br>\n<strong>Changing table<\/strong><br>\n<strong>Dresser<\/strong><br>\n<strong>Mobile<\/strong>\u2014Etsy has many beautiful ones (like this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/listing\/651453615\/natural-neutral-baby-mobile-felt-ball?ga_order=most_relevant&amp;ga_search_type=all&amp;ga_view_type=gallery&amp;ga_search_query=baby+mobile&amp;ref=sr_gallery-1-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Natural and Neutral by TikTak Design<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>TRAVEL\/LEAVING THE HOUSE<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Must haves:<\/strong><\/em><br>\n<strong>Car Seat<\/strong>\u2014we started out with the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Z84cl9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Britax B-Safe infant seat<\/a>, which lasted us through our first two, and was simple and totally functional for us (and looks even cozier now). Then we went with the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GaEEem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uppababy Mesa<\/a> for our third and absolutely love it. It feels so cushy, supportive and comes with an infant insert already.<br>\n<strong>Stroller<\/strong> (with car seat attachment if possible)\u2014we have the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GdsmSm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uppababy Vista<\/a>, which conveniently clicks into our carseat without any attachments. It also is incredibly versatile.. you can add a seat, a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2X5ch8d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;piggyback&#8217; board<\/a> for older kids to stand on. It was an investment piece for us, but we&#8217;ve gotten incredible use out of it! <a href=\"https:\/\/mrscaseyann.com\/2018\/03\/12\/adjusting-to-life-with-three-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I write more about it on this post \ud83d\ude42<\/a><br>\n<strong>Baby Carrier or Sling\u2014<\/strong>we have a <a href=\"https:\/\/wildbird.co\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WildBird sling<\/a> (Sparrow) which is nice for quickly getting baby on. We also have a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Uf7TBK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multi-positional Ergo baby carrier<\/a>, especially for back carrying.<br>\n<strong>Diaper Bag or Backpack\u2014<\/strong>I&#8217;ve been all over the map with backpacks, diaper bags, downgrading to simply a purse, etc. In the newborn stage, it is seriously helpful to have everything on hand. I&#8217;ve been eyeing something new this go-around and love this <a href=\"http:\/\/goto.target.com\/c\/1354707\/201333\/2092?prodsku=76155084&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fp%2Fpetunia-picklebottom-diaper-bag-birch-black%2F-%2FA-76155084\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Petunia Pickle Bottom backpack<\/a>&nbsp;which has functionality for the big kids too (cold packs in the bottom!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Great to have:<\/strong><\/em><br>\n<strong>Pack-n-play\u2014<\/strong>we love our <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.nordstrom.com\/s\/nuna-sena-aire-travel-crib\/5144024?country=US&amp;currency=USD&amp;mrkgcl=760&amp;mrkgadid=3313967846&amp;utm_content=33238407526&amp;utm_term=aud-561588815748:pla-261774766723&amp;utm_channel=shopping_ret_p&amp;sp_source=google&amp;sp_campaign=674512778&amp;rkg_id=0&amp;adpos=1o2&amp;creative=146666627211&amp;device=c&amp;matchtype=&amp;network=g&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw7sDlBRC9ARIsAD-pDFq1eeaXXGMtK_2_kkgXWnXeclKaFO5Hw8tN75yNWKEexIs8K_Vs0CQaAjcjEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nuna Sena<\/a>, which has lasted through three kids but is a little tired right now (we&#8217;ve used it nearly daily for five years!). It has a newborn insert so you don&#8217;t have to crouch down to put babe in. I&#8217;ve got the <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.nordstrom.com\/s\/nuna-cove-aire-travel-crib\/5262821?origin=coordinating-5262821-0-1-PDP_1-recbot-also_viewed&amp;recs_placement=PDP_1&amp;recs_strategy=also_viewed&amp;recs_source=recbot&amp;recs_page_type=product&amp;recs_seed=5144024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nuna Cove Aire<\/a> in my cart since we&#8217;ve loved it so much. The only difference is this one has a newborn insert that hugs baby, which my newborns have <em>loved<\/em>&nbsp;over lying flat.<br>\n<strong>Jogging stroller<\/strong> (or double if need be)\u2014this item we didn&#8217;t get right away, but when Kate was born, we were given the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2G9o6Dy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thule Urban Glide 2 (the double stroller)<\/a>. We&nbsp;<em>love<\/em> this thing, and have used it daily for almost three years, and it is still in great condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AT HOME<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Must haves:<\/strong><\/em><br>\n<strong>Activity center\u2014<\/strong>there are so many different versions of ways to keep your infant entertained! We&#8217;ve had a few, some are way more aesthetically pleasing (depending on your preference) however the <a href=\"http:\/\/goto.target.com\/c\/1354707\/78775\/2092?prodsku=75663075&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fp%2Fbright-starts-2-in-1-silly-sunburst-activity-gym-saucer-red%2F-%2FA-75663075\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bright Stars&#8217; 2-in-1 Activity Center and Saucer that I&#8217;m linking here<\/a>, I found to be a smart buy because it starts with the lay-down activity center and graduates to the saucer version, which is so helpful later.<br>\n<strong>Infant seat or&nbsp;newborn lounger\u2014<\/strong>there are so many styles to choose from! We&#8217;ve used a couple different seats from Fisher Price&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2X71nPp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this bouncer seat<\/a>&nbsp;and this <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Deegzy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infant-to-toddler seat<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2XbxSfn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bumbo<\/a> seat, the similar <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2G7PmlW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ingenuity seat<\/a>&nbsp;and<br>\n<strong>Blanket\/mat for playing or laying on floor\u2014<\/strong>thick and cushioned activity mat, especially if you have hardwood or tile, are so helpful. This <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Igy5uq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sweet HugeHug Playmat<\/a> one has raised edges to keep them from rolling off, which happens faster than you think!<strong><br>\n<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2DbfqvH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baby-proofing&nbsp;essentials<\/a><\/strong> (here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parents.com\/baby\/safety\/babyproofing\/child-proofing-must-haves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">good list<\/a> for that)<br>\n<strong><br>\n<em>Great to have:<\/em><br>\nSwing<\/strong>\u2014we borrowed this <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2XatWvw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Graco Glider swing<\/a> with our first but never actually purchased one. And while we don&#8217;t have the space for one at the moment, it was so nice to have, especially when your arms are tired from holding\/rocking. The <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2X7qD84\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4Moms mamaRoo<\/a> is also extremely well-reviewed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DIAPERING<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Must haves:<\/strong><\/em><br>\n<strong>Diapers and wipes<\/strong>\u2014we&#8217;ve liked so many, we&#8217;re using the Cloud Island brand for both <a href=\"http:\/\/goto.target.com\/c\/1354707\/201333\/2092?prodsku=53298333&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fp%2Fclub-pack-diapers-size-2-96ct-cloud-island-153%2F-%2FA-53298333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diapers<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/goto.target.com\/c\/1354707\/201333\/2092?prodsku=53295148&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fp%2Fbaby-wipes-800ct-cloud-island-153%2F-%2FA-53295148\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wipes<\/a> from Target right now.<br>\n<strong>Diaper rash ointment<\/strong><br>\n<strong>Diaper changing pad<\/strong> with a couple covers\u2014I always liked the velvety style like <a href=\"http:\/\/goto.target.com\/c\/1354707\/78775\/2092?prodsku=51911929&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fp%2Fplush-changing-pad-cover-birch-cloud-island-153-gray%2F-%2FA-51911929\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this one from Target<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Great to have:<\/strong><\/em><br>\n<strong>Bottom spray\u2014<\/strong>most of this section is fairly preferential however this bottom spray isn&#8217;t something I&#8217;ve seen everywhere! <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2UV4ZXe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honest Company has a great bottom spray<\/a> that you use when you come across a super messy change sesh that pretty much replaces using soap and water.<br>\n<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2IiBOHY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peepee teepee<\/a><\/strong> (for the boys!)\u2014it&#8217;s some splashy business changing a newborn baby boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NURSING\/EATING<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mrscaseyann.com\/2014\/07\/09\/my-nursing-essentials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check out my more thorough nursing essentials here!<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Must haves:<\/strong><\/em><br>\n<strong>Nursing pillow, nursing accessories\u2014<\/strong>I&#8217;ve loved my <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2GmglM4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boppy pillows<\/a>. Above I lay out all the different accessories I&#8217;ve found super helpful throughout.<br>\n<strong>Muslin blankets\u2014<\/strong>for burp cloths and general constant clean up \ud83d\ude09 I&#8217;ve used Milkbarn, Aden &amp; Anais and I&#8217;ve got <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2X8PBUy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">these by Oliver &amp; Rain<\/a> on my list for baby brother.<br>\n<strong>Bottles and accessories<\/strong>, breast milk storage bags, etc. (here is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whattoexpect.com\/first-year\/bottle-gear-checklist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">good list<\/a> for that!)<br>\n<strong>High chair<\/strong> (for solid food)\u2014we also use our Ingenuity seat for this.<br>\n<strong>Infant spoon<\/strong> (for solid food)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-3 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-5 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LINEN\/CLOTHING<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Must haves:<\/strong><\/em><br>\n<strong>Crib bedding and blankets\u2014<\/strong>We have some great crib sheet sets from Babyletto and I love <a href=\"http:\/\/goto.target.com\/c\/1354707\/78775\/2092?prodsku=75003280&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.target.com%2Fp%2Fcrib-bedding-set-geo-bright-cloud-island-153-green%2F-%2FA-75003280\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this set from Cloud Island<\/a>. We also have some&nbsp;beautiful blankets have been made for us (nothing replaces homemade gifts) and Etsy is another great spot to find something hand-crafted. We&#8217;ve also had great luck with our quilts and baby blankets from Anthropologie (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropologie.com\/shop\/montmartre-kids-sham?category=kids-baby-bedding&amp;color=014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love this one<\/a>) and Crate and Kids, formerly Land of Nod (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crateandbarrel.com\/hoppy-tails-pom-pom-baby-quilt\/s164738\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">love this one too<\/a>).<br>\n<strong>Waterproof mattress protector<\/strong><br>\n<strong>Onesies\u2014<\/strong>This is the main piece of clothing we dress our newborns in, along with a cozy blanket. I love our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Igu0WW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pact organic onesies<\/a>,<br>\n<strong>Footed pajamas<\/strong>, sleep sacks!\u2014Halo Sleepsacks are amazing. These <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2UO32fn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">organic footed pajamas by L&#8217;ovedbaby<\/a> are so soft.
